The Funeral Mass for Mr. Fred D. Keil, age 62, of Clayton will be 10am Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church with Ft. Arthur LaBaff officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Clayton American Legion, will be in Barnes Cemetery in the Town of Alexandria. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton.
Fred died Thursday at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Fred was born October 20th, 1949 in Buffalo, son of Frederick and Florence Zachowicz Keil. He graduated from Buffalo schools and entered the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He was honorable discharged April 29, 1970.
After his discharge, Fred graduated from Erie Community College. He then went to work at St. Regis and Bethlehem Steel Factories in Buffalo. He then moved to Rochester and worked at Gleason Works. In 1988 he became a N.Y.S. Corrections Officer and retired after 24 years in January of 2010.
Fred was a past commander of the American Legion Colon Couch Post 821 where he was also a member of the color guard.
He enjoyed camping, Nascar, golfing, fishing and baseball.
After his first marriage ended in divorce, he married the former Barbara J. Umstead Nicholas on September 25th, 2004 in Alexandria Bay.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Amanda (Tim) Elder and Mrs. Carrie (Scott) Mattoon of Rochester; one step-son Jamie Nicholas of Clayton; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He is pre-deceased by a step-son Daniel Nicholas Jr., who died August 17, 2005, and also two sisters Cathy Haymen and Carol Jarworski.
