Mr. Peter M. Hummer, 79, died Tuesday, April 25th, at his residence, after a two-year illness.
Peter MacFarlane Hummer was born January 28th, 1944, in Syracuse, the son of Doctor William and Shirley Gilkison Hummer. After being raised in Brooklyn, he attended Denison University and served as a Medic in the United States Army in Vietnam from March of 1968 until March of 1971.
After his return from the service, he attended Emory University, where he was a member of the 2nd graduating class of Physicians Assistants. In the early 1970’s he moved to Alexandria Bay, where he worked as a Dedicated Primary Care Provider until his retirement. Throughout his career, he was always available to his patients, often answering his home phone whenever they called.
On October 3rd, 1981, he married his beloved wife, Denise Ray LaLonde. Denise and Peter were married for over 41 years.
Personally, and professionally, Peter was a lifelong learner and teacher. He was an avid lover of the outdoors and was especially fond of taking care of the post and beam house he built on their 50 acres of land. He also enjoyed coin collecting, home gardening, landscaping, and caring for the multiple cats they had adopted over the years.
He was a loving grandfather, and in recent years his greatest joy was spending time with his 7 grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife Denise, are three children, Doctor Kristina K. Hummer of Norwich, Sean (Kyleigh) Hummer of Redwood, and Denise F. LaLonde-Paul of Ithaca; seven grandchildren, Dustin, Layla, Lucien, Ben, Drew, Bella, and Arianna; siblings, (Alfred) and Patricia-Pitts of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Wendy (Jerry) Klinkner of Normal, Illinois; Leslie (Alan) Lahue of West Simsbury, Connecticut; and Scott (Rhonda) Hummer of Madison, New York; nieces and nephews.
His parents and his sister-in-law Deborah K. Niles predeceased him.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 29th, from 2-4pm, followed by a short prayer service at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton.
