The funeral for Mr. John H. Eckert, age 72, who died Friday Jan. 6th, at the Hospice of Jefferson County, where he had been a resident for the past month, will be Saturday, January 14th at 3pm at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. Calling hours will be 1pm until the time of the service.
A Spring burial will be held in Grove Cemetery in LaFargeville.
John was born April 22nd, 1944, in Watertown, the son of Frank and Madeline Byrne Eckert. He graduated from LaFargeville schools.
He entered the United States Marine Corp on August 21st, 1962, and was Honorable Discharged, August 20th, 1965 at the rank of Corporal.
On December 7th, 1988, he married Gert Gregor, in Las Vegas. She was his companion and wife for over 40 years.
John was a General Contractor. He owned the LaFargeville and Depauville Convenience Stores for a number of years before he sold them. He also owned for a period of time the Brockville Speedway.
He was an avid Nascar fan, and dirt track racing fan.
John was on the Board of Agriculture of N.N.Y. in Stone Mills, and on the Grove Cemetery Board in LaFargeville, where he was very active volunteering time improving all aspects of the cemetery.
He enjoyed cooking, snowmobiling, and watching favorite NFL team the Cowboys play.
John is survived by his wife Gert; his one sister, Susan (Leo) Lindley of Cortland; five step children, Chris Brougham of LaFargeville, Gregor Brougham of Point Peninsula, Sandra Brougham Sneddon and Mary (Jan) Maas, both of Sackets Harbor, and Lynda (John) Lawler of LaFargeville; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Donations can be made in his name to the Grove Cemetery Association in LaFargeville, N.Y.
