Richard Ernest “Ricky” Heyman, 74, of Clayton, New York, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a life defined by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength.
Ricky’s passing came just one week after the loss of his beloved wife, Gloria Anne Heyman, his partner of fifty-seven years. Their bond was unbreakable, built on a lifetime of shared memories, unwavering support, and deep love. Those who knew them understood that they were truly inseparable, and Ricky’s heart remained forever tied to Gloria’s.
Born on October 24, 1951, Ricky was a lifelong resident of Clayton, a community he held close to his heart. He briefly attended Thousand Islands High School and spent his life rooted in the place he loved. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—time with family, holding a fishing pole, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the Thousand Islands.
A rabid New York Islanders fan who loved listening to classic rock, Ricky had a love for fishing, playing poker, and savoring his favorite baked treats. He cared deeply about the river he loved and supported the mission of Save The River, believing the St. Lawrence should be protected and preserved for generations to come. His compassion extended to animals as well; he had a special place in his heart for strays, always offering them a sense of belonging through food, shelter, and kindness.
On October 21, 1971, Ricky married Gloria Anne Kulesa at the Episcopal Church in Clayton. Together, they built a life centered on loyalty, perseverance, laughter, and unconditional love. Through every challenge, they remained devoted partners, honoring their vows for more than five decades.
In his twenties, Ricky’s life plans took a dramatic turn following a serious automobile accident that left him with permanent life-altering conditions. Despite being given little chance of survival, he went on to live another fifty years, facing countless health and medical challenges with determination and humor. He often joked about having nine lives, and time and again, he proved his strength and will to keep going.
Family was Ricky’s greatest pride and joy. He deeply loved his daughters and cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Mariana and Jakob Kraus. Being their grandfather brought him immense happiness, and he took great pride in watching them grow.
Ricky’s life was a testament to perseverance. He overcame obstacles that would have discouraged many, always finding a way forward. Yet after Gloria’s passing, the strength that had carried him for so long gently faded. After fifty-seven years together, life without her felt incomplete.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gloria Anne Heyman; his father, Ernest Heyman; and his grandmother, Lillian Diabo, who was sharp, direct, and took no nonsense, leaving a lasting impression on Ricky and helping shape the resilience he carried throughout his life.
Ricky is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Kraus (Dan Bazile) of Clifton Park and Anne Hodkinson (Mike) of Brantingham Lake; his cherished grandchildren, Mariana and Jakob Kraus; his former son-in-law, Thomas Kraus; his loving mother, Marie “Dee Dee” Heyman of Clayton; his brothers, Michael Heyman, Robert (Jane) Heyman, and William (Mary) Heyman; and his sister, Geraldine (Patrick) Dewey. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. His siblings were not only family, but lifelong friends who shared in his journey.
Ricky will be remembered for his strength, independence, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. Above all, he will be remembered for the extraordinary love he shared with Gloria—a partnership marked by devotion, sacrifice, and enduring affection.
For much of his life, Ricky defied expectations. In the end, he found peace.
His family takes comfort in knowing that Ricky and Gloria are reunited, their love continuing beyond this life.
In accordance with Ricky’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. His family will honor how he wanted to be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family is grateful for donations made to Richard’s Legacy Care Fund https://gofund.me/e90619efb which is helping to offset the cost of his complex health and medical expenses and in honoring his final wishes.
Contributions in his memory may also be made to Hospice of Jefferson County and Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service (TIERS) in appreciation of their compassionate care, or to Save The River and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, organizations that held special meaning to both Ricky and Gloria.
